Abstract

The purpose of this work is to analyze the portrait of Augustus in Tacitus, through the study of Annales I 9-10, the so-called Totengericht of the prince. The analyse reveals that the tacitean text depends of the Res Gestae Diui Augusti, the political testament of Augustus, to which indirect reference is made continuously in the passage. The work takes also on account the hypothetical existence of a fons communis to Tacitus and Cassius Dio, but the conclusion in this point is negative.
