Abstract

The autor of this paper offers an etymology for the toponyme Oestrymnides in Avienus. The originary etymon would be composed of oestr-, from a paleoeuropean root *eis- ‘to move fast, with impetus’ and -ymnides, from -umni- ≺ *ub-ni-, also a paleoeuropean formation of the series uba ‘water, river’. Another form of the same series, ubna, would be the responsible for the second part of the rivername Garumna. This second formation and others related, as abnis, abna, would be part of other toponyms in Spanish territory.
