Naming as a Human Linguistic Act in Parmenides

As the work of several scholars has shown in the last decades, there is in Parmenides, with respect to his predecessors, an enhanced awareness of the threefold connection between reality, thinking and language. Starting from the researches devoted to names and naming (ὀνόματα, ὀνομάζω) in Parmenides by Woodbury (1958 & 1986), this study sets out to examine anew on a broader basis the four explicit references to the naming procedure (Parm. 28 B 8.38-41; B 8.53-56; B 9.1 ff.; B 19.3 DK), which are viewed from a semiotic standpoint so as to bring out the role played by language in the epistemological approach of the Eleatic thinker. In particular, it is shown how Parmenides’ criticism directed at the δόξαι βροτῶν need not be linked to his conventionalist outlook on language, but rather to the identification of a failure in the cognitive process leading to a classification of the real by mortal men.
