The aition, a Characteristic Feature of the Ehoiai

The erudite-mythical-literary procedure of nominal and factual derivation called aition is not exclusive of the Hellenistic and later literature, although it is there where it has been more studied. Aition is present in the tragedy, earlier in the lyric and indeed in the epic, not in the Homeric one, but in the Homeric Hymns and especially in the didactic epos of Hesiod, concretely in Theogony and particularly in the Catalogue of Women or Ehoiai, where it can be considered one of its main characteristic traits. This I will try to show in the following pages, after classifying the Hesiodic aition from the point of view of its denominative and procedural typology, and from its differentiation according to the factual object of each aition.
