Apuleius, Hermetism, Hermes Trismegistus, ApologyAbstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze some parallels between the Hermetic texts and Apuleius’ work. First, I will present some general concomitances; then, I will focus on the practice of the animation of statues and, specially, on the figure of the βασιλεύς and its relation with the reverence of the cosmos. I will pay special attention to Apuleius’ Apology and the Hermetica transmitted by Joannes Stobaeus, although I will also take into account other texts —both Hermetic and Apuleian— which will help to further develop this analysis.
