The term ἀναμάρτητος, which has not yet been examined in a case study from a semantic point of view, deserves thorough consideration, particularly attractive in Plutarch’s corpus. After concisely assessing the adjective in the history of Greek literature, in this article we will underline the religious and moral relevance —both in quantitative and qualitative terms— that the word ἀναμάρτητος takes on in the work of Plutarch, who readjusts the meaning of the term and explores its religious and moral acceptation in a doctrinal, stylistic and rhetorically innovative way. The six pertinent extracts that we comment in this article lead to conclusions of relevance on Plutarch’s didactic, moral, religious and theological objectives.
