This article examines the Homeric formula νεκύων ἀμενηνὰ κάρηνα, used to refer to the deceased who appear before Odysseus in the Nekyia. Through a detailed analysis of each term that composes the expression, their specific meanings within the Homeric poems and their function in the corresponding passages are investigated. The comprehensive analysis of the formula’s constituent terms and their specific role within the Homeric passage allows for a deeper understanding of the semantic nuances associated with the deceased evoked in this episode.
