Gellius’ Noctes Atticae is one of the best books to understand the metaphorical nature of intellectual concepts, such as eruditio and quaestiones. The abstract nature of these concepts, however, is a translation of the sensible world. In this way, Latin language builds these concepts with metaphors taken from the real world, such as objects, supplies, desserts, offerings, knots, and actions like dicing or mixing several things. In addition, the idea of place will be very important to express difficulties, specially difficulties in learning. Finally, we shall deal with the basic metaphor of eruditio in terms of light, which explains the title of Gelius’ book).
