David's Double Victory according to Josephus

The Bible preserves two versions of the story of David's double victory, first over an Ammonite-Syrian coalition and then over a Syrian force, i.e. Samuel 10 and 1 Chronicles 19. This article studies a third version of David's two victories, namely, that of Josephus in Ant. VII 121-129, comparing this in detail with its Biblical source texts as represented by MT, 4QSama, Codex Vaticanus and the Lucianic (or Antiochene) MSS of the LXX, and the Targums. The article devotes special attention to such questions as the text-form(s) of the sources available to Josephus, his various modifications of their data and the effects of these, and the messages his version might be intended to convey to his double audience, i. e. (Roman) Gentiles and fellow Jews.
