This paper tries to establish the relations between two intertwined aspects of the complex world of Roman marriage: the social aspect and the linguistic hone. The Roman marriage appears to be based on an interplay of relations between the bride' s father, the bride and the bridegroom, all of them depending on one economical element: the dowry. The different verbal lexemes used in Latin show the different types of marriage and the point of view they are looked upon from.
