Abstract

t is almost universally admitted that in the Laconian inscription IG V.1 700, Διοhικετα and Διολευθερι [-] stand for the phonetic evolution of Διὸζ Ἱκέτα and Διὸζ Ἐλευθερίō. In both sequences final /s/ before an initial vowel allegedly underwent lenition, similarly to intervocalic /s/ in inner word position. The paper shows that this interpretation must be rejected for various reasons. On the contrary, both forms can be accounted for as compounds with first element Διοo.
