Abstract

It is contended that relatives without a verb are a normal construction in Latin. Here one is not dealing with archaic syntagmas in which the relative has the value of a nominal determiner, as sustained by E. Benveniste. The function of such relative constructions is complex; our aim is to analyse their semantic content in semes and their syntactic value through opposition with other pronouns, quis, is and hic.
