Abstract

The ciceronian sapiens, differently from the stoic one, accepts both opinion and doubt, and, in contrast to the epicurean one, implicates his wisdom in political tasks. This sapiens is the epistemological foundation of the princeps, who requires that sort of non-dogmatic and practical wisdom. The sapiens makes his way to politics as an exigency due to reason and the princeps approaches philosophy as an open and plural foundation.
