This paper, taking as a starting point the adjective Salmacida, establishes the existence of a relation between Ennius’ fragment Salmacida spolia sine sudore et sanguine and the fr. 178 N2 χλἡδοντα, which belongs Aeschylus’ tragedy. Such relation serves to strengthen the opinion of Vahlen and other philologists concerning the belonging to the Aiax of the mentioned verse, attribution not shared by all the publishers of Ennius’ tragedies. Also upon the base of the relation between Salmacida spolia and χλἡδοντα it attempts to prove that Ennius did not take Sophocles Αἴας μαστιγοφόρος as the only reference while writing his homonymous work.
