Got. hwaiwa / Ohg. hwēo are originally compounds of *KṷéH1 + *H2eiṷéH1 and *KṷéH1 + *H2éiṷi ‘how ever?’ respectively. The first member of these compounds is part of a system reconstructed here as *Kṷē(i) [*KṷeH1-i, *KṷeH1i] - *Kṷō(u) [*KṷeH3-u, *KṷeH3ṷ], which appears in Germ. interrogative model adverbs. The second member consist of two lengthened forms of the root *H2eiṷ- ‘(life)-time’ and has cognates in Germ. and Greek. So, *H2eiṷéH1 > Got. -aiwa, Oic. aeva, Ags. āwa, Gr. tar. αἰἡ, lac. ἀἡ, and *H2éiṷi > Got. aiw, Oic. ae, ey, Ohg. -ēo, Gr. eol. ἀίϊ.
