Abstract

This paper offers a study of the working of non-regular clauses in dactylic hexameter in Silius Italicus’ Punica and makes a comparison between his procedures and the «model poets», mainly Virgil’s. Silius Italicus uses non-regular clauses much less frequently than Virgil, but with similar stylistic values. The most frequent clauses are those we will call si bona norint and armaque nostra, which usually appear related to enjambement. However, Silius Italicus’ main innovation lies in his use of both types of clauses, combined with enjambement and chiasmus.
