Petronius’ sentence ubique medius caelus est could be read as something more than a standard gnomic definition. Considering that philosophical language often falls into common sentences. Petronius’ proverb can be regarded as a popular reading of the cosmopolite prescription of a widely spread ethical thought about man’s indifference to external events.
