Abstract

Umbrian prinuvatus, usually translated as ‘legati, ministri’, has not yet received a convincing explanation. We seek to associate it in our paper with I.E. *wāt-, which we do not fail to find among the Western languages, i.e., O. Ir. fáith, Lat. uātes ‘poet’: O. Germ. *woða (cf. O. Eng. wōd, O. Ic. ōðr, ‘inspired’, etc.). If so, the Iguvinian Tables would provide us with another noteworthy lexical archaism.
