Abstract

The traditional prehistorical initial stress theory should be revised. The data that are here dealt with by the author reveal an alternative possibility: vocalic transformations can be likewise explained if we assume that the prehistorical Latin accent fell on the first long vowel of a word or on the first syllable when a word did not contain any long vowel.
