The aim of this paper is to determine the meaning of the demonstratives in Attic Greek. The first section is concerned with a theoretical discussion about deixis, on the basis of which it is argued that the degrees of distance expressed by the dem. can account for all their actual usages. The second section surveys the instances of dem. in the Corpus Lysiacum. The conclusion is drawn that in every localization-domain οὗτος is used to refer to near place and ἐκεῖνος to a far one, whereas ὅδε, limited to some given contexts, is synonimous with οὗτος.
