Abstract

The controversy between rhetoric and philosophy, whose origins are found in Plato and Isocrates, appears repeatedly in the writings of the emperor Julian. Julian's arguments against rhetoric are an exponent of a political attitude highlighted by the battle against Christianity and the attempt to create a pagan confessional state. In this context, refusing the rhetoric means the rejection of a form of culture which is unable to offer the individual the possibility of satisfying either his religious or his existential needs.
