It is traditionally asserted that there is an enormous difference between the treatment of the etymology given by the ancient tradition and the one of modern Linguistics. In this paper the authoress tries to tinge this assertion pointing out to some Latin grammarians, especially Varro, who forebode contemporary scientific formulations. However, the poets use the etymology just as a rhetorical «ornament».
