This paper deals with Philodemus’ reasons for quoting Hermarchus the Epicurean and Alexinus the Megarian on the technicity of rhetoric. It purports to correct some former interpretations. The passage from Alexinus Περὶ ἀγωγῆς has some bearing, as well, on the elucidation of Ephorus’ testimonium 31 (FGrHist 70 T 31).
