Two reasons are given in opposition to Kenyon’s suggestion that the papyrus of Ath. Pol. (22.5) is corrupt in the word πεντακοσίων (ed. princeps, London 1891, p. 60): a) The 500 citizens preselected by the demotai for the κλἡρωσις of the nine archons, who appear in the mentioned chapter, 22.5, correspond to the 500 bouleutai, who, after Kleisthenes’ Reform, were elected by lot; b) the text of Ath. Pol. 8.1, is interpreted in a different way from Kenyon, taking into account that, after Kleisthenes, the Demoi made the mentioned preselection, and the tribes were artificial formations and not specific places of citizen participation. Apart from Kleisthenes’ Reform, other sources are considered, and the words ... μετ’ ἐννέα ἀρχόντων... (Ath. Pol. 62.1) are revised. A different meaning from Kenyon is given to them.
