Abstract

In its first part, this paper studies the repetitions and variations that can be found in the catalogical transmission of the first mythical Athenian kings as a consequence of the transition from orality to writing. The second part discusses Erichthonius' birth myth according to Pausanias, searches for the mythological meaning of the wool in connexion with related ritual aspects and scientific analogies, and emphasizes the role of the virgin goddess Athena in the institutionalizing of human fecundity and sexual relationship.
