Abstract

This paper intends two aims: first of all to study the similes in the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid basically from an internal point of view. The difference between the Homeric and Virgilian comparisons is evident. Homer's similes are an everlasting picture («so it is, so it was» and «so it will be») basically of the natural phenomena perceived by the senses and the don't try to explain anything. On the other hand, we find in Virgin «an ideological and literary manipulation» of the simile absolutely different from that of Homer. However, the Homeric similes are partially the model of those of Virgil, as it is detailed on the paper.
