The metaphor intemerata dei virgo, which refers to the oratio in Pacianus of Barcelona, is a form of a metaphor well-known from the ancient rhetorical tradition. Examination of this metaphor yields certain conclusions which together with the distinctiones of MS Reginensis 331 form the basis of any study of compositio in the periodic style of Pacianus.
