Some words -ă- in Latin and other Indoeuropean languages are analyzed, discovering in them rests of the ø grade of disyllabic stems which, according to the traditional opinion, would have evolved necessarily into -ā-. Futhermore the Latin doublet clārus/clăssis, clăngo leads the author to postulate the decisiveness of the syllabic cut in the treatment of the ø/ ø grade in the disyllabic stems.
