Abstract

After reviewing the not very satisfactory interpretatios given to Myc. ka-ru-ti-je-ja-o (PY Ad 671) the author proposes it to be related with a form *καλύθιον, diminutive of κάλαθος, related with καλαθιον. The alternance u/a is explained on the basis of two different vocalizations of *H3, a fact of which there are parallels in Indo-European (cf. Het. kaluti-) and in Mycenaean (cf. da-mu/du-ma). An analysis of other words of the same root is given and also is proposed the identificacion of *καλύθιον with ideogram *168. The likely translation of ka-ru-ti-je-ja-o could be «women makers or bearers of little baskets».
