Abstract

The aim of this paper is the study of αὖ and αὖθις in the texts of Greek historians. Αὖθις prototypically functions as an adverb, but the same can not be said of αὖ, which is considered by some scholars to be a particle. Both words are etymologically related and are used as discourse markers in similar contexts. I am going to argue that αὖ and αὖθις are to be described in my corpus as temporal adverbs that can be used as discourse markers, a function proper to the so-called particles in Ancient Greek. Their function as discourse markers is to be classified among the discourse organisers that structure series of parallel members.
