From a rethorical point of view, Mamertinus’ gratiarum actio to Julian Emperor is a very particular text. A close reading of the early writings by Julian shows how the gratiarum actio relies heavily on some of Julian’s philosophical and rethorical doctrines. The concepts of ἀρετή-uirtus, δίκη-iustitia, σωφροσύνη- moderatio and ciuilitas appear as the nuclear points of the panegyric: Julian’s idea of a perfect ruler shines in ἀρετή- uirtus, δίκη-iustitia, σωφροσύνη- moderatio; with ciuilitas, the traditional virtue of roman emperors Mamertinus claims the History’s favourable judgment for Julian.
