This article deals with some hittite forms that show writing >z-< instead of the etymologically expected >s-<: at least for the forms indicated in the title, which guarantee that the point of departure must be the sibilant /s-/ reconstructed for the Proto-Indo-European, the proposed hypothesis is that the use of >z-<, intended as the actual representation of an affricate /tˢ-/, is due to the phonosymbolic value that this recent sound, of Proto- Anatolian date, can receive as sistematically opposed to the previously existent and isolated /s-/. Close parallels from Iberian languages, Basque and Spanish, are adduced.
