Abstract

The origin of Latin gerunds and gerundives has not yet received a satisfactory solution. The author, following a suggestion of Thurneysen, proposes that gerundives were the origin of gerunds, because they were common to Latin and Italic dialects. The gerundives, on its side, are simply an Italic evolution of the middle Indo-European participle ending in -menos.
